What is an Inductor?
An inductor is a passive electronic component intended for magnetic energy storage of electrical energy. Usually composed of a coiled conductor—typically copper wire—it is twisted around an air, iron, or ferrite core. As electricity flows across this coiled arrangement, the inductor can create a magnetic field.
An Inductor's Mechanism
From left to right, electric current passing through an inductive coil creates a magnetic field in a clockwise orientation. The secret of inductive function is this magnetic field.
Here's the detailed process:
Long as current is running across the inductor, it stores electrical energy in its magnetic field.
If the current changes—as in an AC circuit—the inductor opposes this shift by generating a voltage in the other direction. Electromotive force (EMF) is this.
While DC (direct current) mostly unaffected, inductive reactance causes difficulty for AC to pass through.
AC opposed DC:
The inductor essentially blocks or reduces the always changing current by opposing it.
DC, or direct current, is constant; once the magnetic field is set, it lets the current flow free, functioning as a short circuit.
